Where I Learned to Swim

"Baby Pool - Intermediate Pool (upper right) and the big Pool (upper left)
The big pool - I just noticed that the low dive and high dive boards have been removed - so sad.
I have many fond memories of the Camas Swimming Pool. It's an outdoor pool and is located precisely two blocks from the house my brother lived in during the summer that I turned 7. During that summer I spent my days with my niece and her cousins...her mom (my sis-in-law at the time) was charged with 4 kids under the age of 8...poor Susie!

We took swim lessons that summer and I quickly progressed from the intermediate pool where we had to learn to float on our bellies and our backs and had to bob underwater. From there it was to the "big" pool where we swam with kickboards and then on to the next station where we learned to swim on our backs. I don't remember how many weeks we were in lessons, but it was long enough for me to get past the station that we learned to swim on our backs and move on to learning the crawl and I didn't get to swim in that station very long, but was able to get the basics of the crawl down.

When our lessons ended, we continued to go to the pool the rest of the summer. We would swim all afternoon, only getting out to lay out long enough to get dry and then jump back in. Then back to the house to wait for my mom to come pick me up from a fun-filled day!

Such great memories of those days at the pool - crazy to think that those days were 40 years ago!
